This article will explain how to setup ad tracking templates for Google Ads. Ad tracking templates are used in two cases:
- When an advertiser uses an external link tracker (on a domain that is different from the final url domain)
- When an advertiser wants to append extra parameters to the final url.
More information on ad tracking templates can be found here and here.
Using an external tracker
When you use an external tracker to track inbound links, you will need to configure a tracking template. In Channable you can create a tracking template in Text Ads > Ad groups > Tracking".
For an external tracker first specify the tracker url. Then add the "{lpurl}" (landing page url) parameter. Important: the {lpurl} must be somewhere in the tracking template.
Appending extra parameters to the final url
Sometimes extra information needs to be appended to the final url, in this case it is easy to use tracking templates in combination with tracking parameters. You can build a new tracking template in "Text Ads > Ad groups > Tracking". Start the tracking template with "{lpurl}?" (this is the landing page url) and add extra parameters as you wish. You can also add dynamic tracking parameters by clicking "new tracking parameter". The following example shows how to use dynamic tracking parameters in the tracking template.
In this case there are 2 dynamic tracking parameters and 1 static parameter. You can add up to 3 tracking parameters.
