Most marketplaces require that you provide the UPC, EAN or GTIN number of a product. They use this to match product information based on this barcode. It depends on the marketplace which type of barcodes you need; some local marketplaces only accept EAN, whereas the global marketplaces usually accept any of these codes.
If these codes are not included in your import, you can add them manually.
Step 1: Get UPC / EAN / GTIN numbers for your products
If you don’t have these barcodes yet, there are two ways to get them:
- Ask your supplier, they should keep a list of barcodes for their products.
- Buy barcodes for your products from GS1, which is the official global barcode provider.
Step 2: Create a data feed
In this step you will create a data feed in a Google Spreadsheet. This feed contains all barcodes, which we will import into Channable.
- Create a new Google Spreadsheet
- Use the first row as a header. You can use for instance ‘ID’ for the first column, and ‘EAN’ for the second column.
- In the first column, provide all the ID’s of your products.
- In the second column you put the matching UPC / EAN / GTIN for each product.
- Use the steps in this article to import this sheet into Channable.
Note: Instead of ID, you could also use another unique identifier for your products in the sheet, such as SKU or the product title. It is however very important that the identifier is unique, and already exists in Channable. Make sure it is exactly the same as what you have in Channable (it is case-sensitive).
Step 3: Combine the data feed with your main import
- After you’ve provided the link to the Google Spreadsheet in Channable, you’re taken to the ‘Edit mapping’ screen.
- At the bottom of the page you can specify which fields you want to combine. Here you select the field that is present in your main import, and in the Google Spreadsheet data feed. In this case, it is id.
- Click ‘Save & Import’. The Google Spreadsheet will now be imported, and the barcode information will be added to your items.
