Automation rules allow you to move, pause, or convert keywords to negative keywords based on performance data provided by bol. This is especially useful when managing multiple campaign generators with varying budgets, as you can transfer high-performing keywords to campaigns with more favorable budgets.
Rule groups in automation
Automation rules operate within what we refer to Rule groups. Understanding the structure and limitations of Rule Groups is essential for successfully taking advantage of automation rules:
- Order of rule groups: The order in which rule groups are executed is important and cannot be changed currently. Rules within a group are executed sequentially from top to bottom.
- Composition of rule groups: Each rule group must contain at least one Automation Rule, and every Automation Rule must have a corresponding action.
- Saving rule groups: Only one rule group can be saved at a time. You must click the SAVE button within the rule group after editing it.
Setting up automation rules
When setting up automation rules, it is essential to understand the importance of rule order and how the rules operate based on performance data.
Step 1: Create a rule group
- Click on the Create rule group button.
Step 2: Configure the rule group
- Name: Give the Rule Group a clear, descriptive name.
- Campaign selection: Select the campaign to which this Rule Group will apply.
- Date range: Set the date range of performance data that the rules in this group will use.
Step 3: Add an automation rule
- Click on Add Automation Rule to include a new rule in the Rule Group.
Step 4: Define the automation rule
- If-Field: Select the appropriate IF-field based on your performance data.
- Filter and value: Apply a filter and set a static value to determine when the rule should trigger.
- Then-statement: Define the action to be taken if the conditions are met.
Working with conditions and actions
Adding conditions
-
Filter conditions: Automation rules are based on filter conditions derived from bol’s performance data. Each condition consists of:
- If-field: The specific field being evaluated.
- Filter type: The type of filter being applied.
- Static value: The value that the condition is checked against.
-
You can add multiple filter conditions by clicking the + button and remove them with the × button.
Adding an action
- Mandatory action: Each automation rule must include an action, found under the THEN column.
- Single Action limit: Currently, only one action per Automation Rule is supported.
Additional rule settings
Date range
- The Date range determines the performance data window that the rules will evaluate. This range is set as a fixed time window counting back from ‘today.’ The options are:
- 7 days
- 14 days
- 30 days
Match type
-
Match type defines how closely a search term must match your target keyword or product.
- Exact match: Only triggers for the exact keyword.
- Phrase match: Triggers for the keyword within a phrase.
For example, a search term like “amazing brand shoes” would not trigger an ad if the match type is set to “exact” with the keyword "brand." However, it would trigger if the match type is "phrase."
Limitations
- Rules per group: You can have a maximum of 20 rules within a single automation rule group.
- Conditions per rule: Each rule can have up to 20 conditions, and each rule must have one action.
