# How to use project-level image rules

### What are project-level image rules?

Project-level image rules are [image rules](/manage-improve-product-data/creatives-create-and-edit-images/image-rules.md) that you can use at **project-level**. Image rules are like instructions you give Channable specifying which image template to apply to product image fields. Before project-level image rules, image rules could only be created per feed.&#x20;

#### How project-level image rules work:

Rules created at project-level apply to all channel setups in that specific project.&#x20;

* If you add rules to apply changes to images in your Meta channel, these changes will also be made to your Google Shopping channel that's in the same project.&#x20;

<table><thead><tr><th width="264">Type of image rules</th><th>Scope</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Feed-level</td><td>Applies changes to one channel (e.g., <em>only</em> Meta)</td></tr><tr><td>Project-level</td><td>Applies changes to all channels in a project (e.g. Meta, Google Shopping, etc.)</td></tr></tbody></table>

#### Best practices:

* **Create a new image field:**

  * To isolate changes to one channel, [add a new image field](/get-started/getting-started/fields-in-channable/map-and-add-fields.md). Instead of editing the original image field that every channel shares, use a new custom field for your edited images.
  * In the [Mapping step of the channel setup](/list-advertise/list-on-channels/set-up-a-feed/set-up-a-feed-mapping-step.md), use this new field as the 'Internal field' for the channel field "image\_link".

#### Limitations of feed-level image rules:

* **Difficult to access:** Requiring a feed setup to open the Image Editor involves 3–4 clicks. Project-level image rules allow one-click template creation and better visibility in the **Creatives** tab.
* **Meta links:** It’s now possible to split image links (via commas/spaces) with rules to send multiple links to Meta in one field. With project-level image rules, this is possible because the **Rules** step occurs after the Image Editor where you can split these links.
* **Inflexible logic:** Feed-level image rules use an older rule infrastructure, which means that the first rule will apply to products and the subsequent rules will not be able to apply changes.
* **Marketplaces:** Workarounds using a "donor project" (exporting/re-importing) are necessary to use images in marketplaces.
  * Image rules on project level occur before the **Build** step of a marketplace setup.
  * This means image links you wish to map will contain the image templates you created in the image editor and applied via the image rules
    . [Learn more in our short video](https://www.loom.com/share/029ef3ab3230422e91d0c55b6665eb2f).&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** Feed-level image rules are not affected by the addition of project-level image rules.
{% endhint %}

### How to add project-level image rules

1. Go to **\[your project] > Creatives > Image rules**.\
   \
   \
   OR<br>

   <figure><img src="/files/5jaVC8r7cBLNnQckZHuA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
2. From the Image Editor: **Saving a new template for the first time:**
   1. A “Template created” modal will show where you can click **Apply template now** to start using the template immediately.&#x20;
   2. When you click **Apply template now**, your template is saved and you are redirected to the Image rules tab.
   3. In the **Image rules** tab, a rule will be created automatically with your new template already selected:\
      If: All; Then: apply template

#### **Important: Save & Run your image rules!**&#x20;

* With image rules on project level (**Creatives > Image rules**), the rules need to run to take effect, so you need to click **Run Now** (top right) or **Save and run** (bottom right).
* Saving a template in the image editor will not run the rules. After making changes to a template, navigate to the **Image rules** tab and click **Run** or **Save and run** to push those changes live.&#x20;
  * The changes will go live at the next [project run schedule](https://helpcenter.channable.com/get-started/getting-started/create-a-new-project/edit-your-project-schedule-settings) (which depends on the your settings - hourly or daily)

### &#x20;Updating an existing template

#### When editing an existing template:

1. When you click **Apply** in the image editor, your changes are saved and you are redirected to the Image rules tab.
2. In the **Image rules** tab, a rule will be created automatically with your new template already selected: If: All; Then: apply template

OR

#### Saving a template for the first time without using it in a rule:&#x20;

1. If you save a template without applying it in a rule, it will have the label ‘Not in use’ in **\[your project] > Creatives**.
2. When you click **Apply template**, you’ll be navigated to image rules on project-level and a rule will be created automatically with this template selected.
