Smart Categorization does not perfectly categorize every item, which means that sometimes you’ll need to map some categories manually.
Manual categorization
To categorize items manually, follow these steps:
- To get an overview of all your uncategorized items, navigate to [Your Google Shopping feed] > Categories and click on the Uncategorized items tab.
- Briefly analyze your uncategorized items. Get an idea of the type of items that are uncategorized so that you can assign them a category later. For example, you may notice that ‘T-shirts’ were not categorized properly but ‘shirts’ are categorized.
- Go to the Manual Categorization tab.
- Click + Add category.
- Set a category for those products using a rule. Let’s use create a rule using an example:
Map a category based on a value in your title
If a product title contains the term 'T-shirt', we want to match that with the category 'Clothing & Accessories > Clothing > Shirts & Tops' in Google. Follow these steps to connect a product to a category:
- In Field, select 'Title'.
- In Filter, select 'Contains'.
- In Value, type in 'T-shirt'. You will fill this in depending on the type of products that are uncategorized.
- Choose the correct category that fits these items from the Set to category dropdown. Use the search field to help you.
- Click Save.
- Once your categories have been updated, you can click on the number in the Items column to get an overview of the items that have been categorized using the rule.
As you apply manual categorization rules to your products, there will be a decrease in the Uncategorized Items count. This is a good indication that you are sorting items into relevant Google Shopping categories correctly .
