Performance Max Assets are different types of objects available on your Google account to be used for the creation of Ads. This article will explain how to add assets to your Performance Max generators. If you are looking for an article on how to set up Performance Max campaigns, please see this page.
To make use of the assets uploaded or created on Google, they need to be assigned to one or multiple asset groups. These asset groups will then use the assigned assets to create the best Ads for your products.
Assets are categorized in different types, and Google limits how many of each type of asset can be linked to an asset group. All types of assets have a maximum number that can be linked to an individual asset group.

Asset Type | Field Type | Supported |

long_headline | yes | |
description | yes | |
business_name | yes | |
Image | marketing_image | yes |
square_marketing_image | yes | |

Link Assets to Asset groups in the tool
In Channable, assets are configured inside the asset group generator level. This means that the assets you set for a generator will be linked to all the asset groups that the generator creates.
To have different assets linked to an asset group, there are two options. You can use dynamic fields to create both the asset groups and the assets. If you do this, each asset group will be linked to the assets created with the values on your feed specific to the asset group.
The second option is to use a different asset group generator.
Creating Assets for your Performance Max Campaign
When setting up your asset group generators for a Performance Max generator, head to the Build step and select the Assets tab.
Text assets
In the Text assets section, you can click the Add headline/Add description buttons to include new fields to your setup. You can use static text, dynamic fields, or a combination of both to fill them in.
Image assets
In the Image assets section, you can click the Add dropdown menu buttons to include new fields to your setup. The dropdown offers two options:
Add by name
With this option, you will add a field to your setup which will require names of image assets that have already been uploaded to Google. Our system will find the image by the given names on Google and link them to the asset groups.
Add by URL
With this option, a new field will be added to your setup requiring URLs of images that have been uploaded to Channable through your imports. Our system will find the image, upload it to Google, and link it to the asset groups.
It is important to note that the fields used in this case, like image_link in the picture above, need to be imported as images. To do that, make sure you select Image type when setting up the mapping for the fields of your import.
When you map a field as an image type, this field should contain URLs to images as its value. These URLs will be used by our tool to download the image and store it in our system, to be used for image assets
Video Assets
In the Video Assets section, you can click the 'Add Youtube URL' button to include new fields to your setup. Similar to previous assets, you can use a static link, dynamic fields, or a combination of both.
Call to Action Assets
In the Call to Action section, you can choose one of the predefined values from the drop-down menu. By default, Channable will use the value: 'Automated', emulating the behavior of new setups by Google.
Can I add and remove Assets in the Google interface?
It is possible for you to add new assets through the Google interface and link them to asset groups. If you use Google’s interface to add assets to an asset group, they are not going to be managed by Channable. Let's say you set 5 text headlines in Channable and then set 5 different ones manually through Google, the asset group is going to have 10 headlines, but only 5 of them will be managed by Channable.
Text Assets
If you add a Text asset to an asset group that is not set in Channable, we are not going to remove the asset. If the link is set in Channable, we will take control of it, so we will remove it from Google if it’s removed from the tool and add it back to Google if it’s manually removed from Google.
Image Assets
Add by name
You are expected to add the Image assets to the Google assets library manually through their interface before being able to use Image assets by name in Channable.
Add by URL
In this case, Channable is the one in charge of uploading and creating the Image assets on Google. You can’t create them manually through Google’s interface and add them in the tool by URL. Use Image assets added by name instead.
Video Assets
Channable will only take control of YouTube Video assets that have been added to the tool setup. If a video has been added manually on Google and is not part of the Channable setup, it won’t be updated by Channable.
If a new or existing YouTube video asset is added to the Channable setup, it will be taken over and be updated by the tool.
Once a YouTube Video asset is under Channable control it will be removed if it’s removed from the setup, and it would be added back again if it were removed from Google manually.
Call to Action Assets
By default, when you create an asset group on Google, it will assign the value: 'Automated' to its Call to Action asset. If this value is changed outside of the Channable tool, Channable will not take control of the asset and the value won’t be updated.
For Channable to take back control, you will need to set the Call to Action value back to 'Automated' on Google and then update the value of it on Channable to the desired one.
Removing assets through the Google interface
It is possible to remove the link between assets and asset groups through the Google interface. If you remove an asset from an asset group that is not set in Channable, we are not going to link it again. If the link removed is set in Channable, the link to the asset group will be created again.
